Its a busy time for VPL clubs as everyone is looking for new talent for the upcoming season. With the impending relegation of at least 2 teams to the newly formed Premier B division in the 10-11 season, the upcoming campaign could prove to be the most competitive and heated races in the VPL's 90 year history. Teams will be looking to find new talent, bring back old talent and some.. just trying to survive the  upcoming season without being relegated.

Before the busy transfer season begins lets take a look at what each of the 9 premier teams need to have a chance at winning the most prestigious hockey title in the America's. Let's start from the bottom and work our way to last years league champions.

Surrey Lions
Key Players:
Ranjeev Deol, Devohn Texerria, Various imports
Last year's premier league rookie's had a solid campaign and have already bolstered their line-up with the addition of Ranjeev Deol and Devohn Texerria. Although they finished in last place, they played several of the top teams very tough and took points from many teams during the year. These are no cellar dwellers, look for them to improve this season and challenge for a playoff spot.
Need to Improve:
They will need to address their goaltending as they were exposed by the top teams last year. Adding another midfielder or defender to provide service for their skill players would really bolster their chances of making the playoffs.

VRC Jokers
Key Players:

Paul Wettlaufer, Pete Short, Steve Warren, Mike Oliver
A team that plays everyone tough and causes top teams problems seems to struggle with consistency and being able to get a complete side out every week. They had some great results last season beating many teams ahead of them in the standings. if they are able to get the services of their National team players for the entire season they could sneak in to the top 4.
Need to Improve:
They will need to find more youth to help increase the pace of their game. They have skills players with tons of fight, but need youth in hopes of keeping this clubs hopes of staying alive in the premier.

University of Victoria
Key Players:

Connor Meakin, Derrick Norton, James Kirkpatrick, Kevin Laidman, Patrick Howell, Keegan Perriera (rumored)
The mighty Vikes struggled last year when the Canadian Junior National team went away losing the services of many of their top players. Rookie coach Mike Lee had them playing a very uptempo game and got the most out of this squad. Their success this season will hinge on how many players return to their squad and which players decide to play for rivals Victoria Selects.
Need to Improve:
Goaltending has been their achilles heel the past few seasons but it has improved steadily. The Vikes could use another defender who can move the ball in the backfield as well as a striker to clean up the many half chances created by tge Vikes speed.

Burnaby Lakers
Key Players
:
Robin D'abreo, Sukh Butter, Taylor Curran, Matt Peck
A team that shows lots of promise but seems to struggle with getting a quality side out every weekend. They have had some tremendous results and seem to be to a few points astray of making the playoffs every year. They will fight to be mid table and possibly find their way in to a playoff race.
Need to Improve:
This team needs to get their best players on the field game in and game out. They also need to add a forward and a midfielder to generate more attack. Another veteran striker would do wonders for this team and could see them make the jump from pretenders to contenders.

India Club
Key Players:

Bindi Kullar, Harp Virdi, Wayne Fernandes (Rumored)
As long as Bindi Kullar is somewhere near the pitch India Club will be in every game this play this season. The possible addition of Wayne Fernandes now gives them dangerous players in each line and a world class penalty corner striker to add 15+ goals per season. A team that has always been dangerous is a whole lot more dangerous.
Need to Improve:
Their role players are getting older and they will need their youth players to take over doing a lot of the dirty work for this team. Another midfielder or striker would make this team a favorite to capture another title.

Victoria Selects
Key Players:

Ravi Kahlon, Sonny Kahlon, Aneal Basi, Mike Lee
The hardest away game of the year, teams travel to Victoria and play a smart squad who make teams have to work to even win 1 point, let alone take 3. We know the stars of this team are some of the best in the league, but the others are who will determine this teams success. Victoria has talent within the junior ranks, but will some of their u16's and u18's be able to step up and provide what is needed to win the title?
Need to Improve:
The team they bring to the city can be sparse at times. If they don't come over with their best team they are hard pressed to take all of the points, remember they play double headers on the mainland. They need their big 3 every match and could use another striker upfront to help Aneal and Jesse Kaloti.

United Brothers
Key Players:

Gubbar Singh. Ravi Agnihotri, Jatinder Kullar, Gurinder Singh
One of the toughest teams to play, and possibly the toughest with the new self start rule. They defend well and teams need to be prepared to win by 1.. or get totally blown out. They do whatever it takes to win and have some of the most skilled players in the league. Not to mention, they have arguably the most skilled juniors in Canada.
Need to Improve:
They just need another defender to take the load off the aging backfield and another midfielder to give them some more legs defensively.

University of British Columbia
Key Players:

Ben Martin, Jesse Watson, Philip Wright, Marian Schole
The glory days may be over for the T-birds. The club will lose some of its more senior and experienced players to duties overseas. However, with younger players picking up the slack this team could make a charge for the premiership. If they can get goals from Jesse Watson via PC's and score by committee they could bring the title back to the Point Grey Campus.
Need to Improve:
Who will play in the midfield? That is a huge question, and do the birds have enough talent to make up for their inexperience?

Vancouver Hawks
Key Players
:
Ian Smythe, Dave Yule, Marek Gacek, David Carter, Mike Hobkirk, Ant Wright
Easily the most balanced and the deepest of all the clubs. They have solid coaching, are organized and have 16 guys who can all play premier hockey at a good standard. They are the team to beat and will continue to be as they reap the benefits of a good youth system and the returning members from UBC to their club. They may drop points with a draw here or there.. but I don't see this team losing much.
Need to Improve:
They could use another quality striker who can unhinge a defense. Hawks were involved in some close tilts last year and could use a few extra goals to get themselves out of some of those tight matches.

Feel free to respond with your thoughts, and as you find out of player moves, transfers and trades please post updates.

Great write-up! Thanks for the information and summary. Although the league has gained a bad reputation over the last bunch of years my feeling is that the league is about to improve.  If we can continue to increase the lack of nasty fouls and encourage good clean hockey the league will continue to grow.  The addition of Surrey is a huge improvement for the league. It's great to see the wide distribution of talent amongst the lead.

My prediction this season is UBC!

UBC eh??? Huh.. always an easy choice. Lets see people's predictions for the top 8-9 in order. Lets see which teams people will think will get religated.

My feeling is that 3rd-9th in the league is a crap shoot.. anyone can end up missing out just because each team loses players when the national team goes away)

1) Hawks (few national team players, not effected as much when the Men's team tours)
2) India Club (Add Fernandes and you have a better defense and 20 more goals.. they add a couple more too)
3) UBC (not as much fire power as their once was)
4) Victoria Selects (Just because they have such a good home record, and few national team players)
_________________________________________
5) UBr (GUUUBBBBBBBAAAAAARRRRR!!!!!... but they could move down)
6) Burnaby Lake (This is a toss up.. they could easily move down, depends on their line-up game to game, they've finished 5th and the the past 2 season... hoping season 3 doesn't leave then in 7th)
_________________________________________
7) Surrey Lions (They could easily be in the top 4... but the unknown number of imports and goaltending has me putting them in 7th)
Cool UVIC (Lost too many players to win big games)
9) Jokers (Just because I heard they might not have a team)

Agree with Lake show, this year will be a bit of a crapshoot. National team players will be away too much, and rarely will a team's best roster be seen on game day.

1) UBC - will dig deep to recover from losing key players
2) Hawks - with national team commitments for Carter, goaltending could be an issue
3) India - the top 3 are a toss-up I think. Any of these team could win it.
4) Selects - inconsistency in turn-out will hurt them

5) UBr - young kids will start to make an impact and help their aging team
6) UVic - Wiggins and Keegan are going to have breakout years

7) Burnaby Lake - will pull out some big wins, but when key players don't show up will drop crucial points
Cool Surrey Lions - Have added Ranjeev, but he will be away too much to make an impact
9) Jokers - have put up flyers at Hamber advertising for new players, but unless De Nooijer responds I don't think it'll help them.

Hopefully all the teams can put out their full rosters, the leauge seems a bit more balanced in terms of team strength. It is essential that the leauge is of high quality to ensure the sucess of Canadian hockey. Looking forward to the season.

just a thought, but given our geographic location and the fact that the national team usually has to travel quite far for games, wouldn't it make sense that the league takes breaks when the national team travels so the quality of hockey doesn't drop?  i feel this would benefit not only the league but also the national team players to get more playing time...every other league seems to do this, why can't we start?

thoughts?

VPL Week 1 Results

Vancouver Hawks 2
Surrey Lions 2
- League champs drop points to a much improved Lions side. Lions goalkeeping kept them in the game... Hawks poor pc conversion rate hurt them.

India Club 6
VRC Jokers 1
- Many people's pre-season favorites show the rest of the league that they are ready to re-take the league title they owned during the 80's and 90's. Goals galore from a number of sources.

UBr 3
UBC 1
- Inexperienced mistakes in the backfield and some clinical finishing has done UBC in. UBr have perfected a style that will keep them in the premier for many years to come.

Victoria Selects 4
UVIC 3
- A game that saw 1 Red Card and 5 Yellows handed out to UVIC. This derby will only get better as UVIC improves. Rumours have a huge transfer between Mark Erickson in the works.

Burnaby Lake - Bye

Week 2 Preview:
UBr vs India
- The best rivalry in the premier has got even better with both teams improving their line-ups and both tied atop the standings after week 1. Rumours have Fernandes out of the line-up for next weeks tilt. That might be enough to sway the advantage in Ubr's favor.

Burnaby Lake FHC vs Vancouver Hawks
- Hawks are favored to take the points in this one. Hawks should be wary of this BLFHC, with nothing to lose... they don't want to be stung with another tie or loss to a 'lesser opponent'.

Vrc Jokers vs Surrey Lions
- The improved Lions will be thrilled by taking points from the Hawks last week and carry it over to this match. The resilient Jokers side is never to be counted out and has come up with some great performances after coming off of loses the previous week. This should be a wide open affair.

Victoria Selects vs UBC
- 2 well prepared and well coached teams. UBC struggles with teams that play wide-open hockey and can spread the field. Do the selects have enough fire-power to clip the T-birds wings. UBC is in tough trying to win on the road in Victoria.

UVic vs UBC
- UVic is always plays an inspired match against UBC... but they don't often end up on the better side of the score line. UBC hopes to take the points and add a few goals .. they score in bunches.

Week 2 Results

Week 2 had its fair share of upsets and showed how tightly contested things will be this season.

VRC Jokers 3
Surrey Lions 2
- As I said in my last report, Jokers come to play and they had a great start vs Lions. They were up at half while Lions squandered chances. A wide open game that was entertaining to match

Burnaby FHC 1
Vancouver Hawks 2
- A tight game that saw both teams fight for points until the end. Ian Smythe scored the winner with 5 minutes left off the baseline. Both teams could have played better, but the match was close and saw some excellent goaltending from our 2 national team goalkeepers.

UBC 2
UVIC 1
- UBC gets the job done. They had numerous chances that saw them miss the net. UVIC has learned the way to stay in games.

UBr 4
India Club 1
- The early league leaders UBr have put their stamp on the first 2 weeks of the league. The self pas rule really suits their style of play. They spread the field vs teams and play some entertaining hockey. India club was missing some key components... put it is great experience for their young players.

Week 3 Matches

UBr
Surrey Lions
- Without some of their national team players this could be an interesting match for both clubs. Lions have played teams in Surrey tough.

Vancouver Hawks
UVIC
- UVIC has a double header this weekend, I think they will come out to play in this one. Hawks haven't looked sharp in their first 2 matches. They may be without the services of Dave Carter... could be closer then people think.

Burnaby FHC
UVIC
- 2nd half of UVIC's double header. Burnaby looks to be without Matt Peck and Taylor Curran while UVIC is wihtout Keegan Perreira and Kevin Laidman (red card). Points are up for grabs

UBC
VRC Jokers
- These games are always tight, give the nod to UBC

I'll be back with week 3 results and a week 4 preview midweek

Week 4

Saw an abbreviated schedule with Canada hosting India in the first 2 matches of the 7 test super series.

UBC 4
Burnaby FHC 2
- With both teams decimated by national team call-ups and the flu a less then stellar match was played at UBC's Wright Field. Richard Hildreth was the difference slotting a 2 corner goals. Burnaby took the lead early, but still show that they need their more experienced players to be competitive versus the big teams
